Hypnosis – How It Works and What It Can Do

Hello, lovely people out there! I'm glad you're here and interested in a topic very close to my heart: hypnosis. Maybe you've wondered, what is hypnosis exactly, and what can it be used for? In this post, I’ll explain how I view and experience hypnosis.

What is hypnosis anyway?

Hypnosis is a state in which our focus is completely turned inward. You could say it’s like a little time-out from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, where the body is deeply relaxed while the mind remains remarkably clear. Perhaps you’ve experienced this feeling just before falling asleep when your body feels heavy and relaxed, or during a meditation.
Hypnosis is a completely natural state that we regularly enter throughout the day – our brain knows and enjoys it. In hypnosis, the brain operates on a specific frequency that helps us better connect with our subconscious.
I guide my clients into this relaxed state when we work together in a session. To quote one of my clients: "That was surprisingly ordinary." Yes, sorry, it’s not as mystical as we might imagine it.

Hypnosis demystified: No fear of hocus-pocus

I understand where the misconceptions about hypnosis come from. They are often shaped by images from movies and TV shows, where hypnosis is portrayed as a form of mind control. These portrayals often show people being made to do things they would never normally do – sometimes with spooky or dramatic effects. But that has nothing to do with real hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a natural state of focus and relaxation where you remain clear-headed and in control at all times. No one can make you do anything in hypnosis that you don’t want to do yourself.

Another common image of hypnosis comes from stage hypnosis shows. In these, hypnosis is presented as a spectacular entertainment element – much like magic shows. And just as we know that magic in shows isn’t real but based on tricks and illusions, we should also see stage hypnosis for what it is: a part of entertainment.

Yes, spectacular things are possible (forgetting your name, the number 4, or having your arm "stick" to your head, and so on). But this only works if the hypnotized person believes it could work. If they resist, the trick won’t succeed. That’s why stage hypnotists are very careful about selecting the participants they hypnotize.

By the way, this form of show is banned in many countries. Partly because it poses risks, such as injuries or psychological strain on participants, and partly because it often distorts the true potential of hypnosis. This can deter people from exploring the positive and serious applications of hypnosis.
The hypnosis used in therapeutic and personal contexts has nothing to do with such performances. It is a tool that helps you work on your issues and make positive changes in your life.

Why hypnosis can be so valuable

Hypnosis is an incredibly versatile tool that can be used in many areas of life. Since 2006, hypnosis has been an officially recognized scientific therapy in Germany and is used by psychologists and therapists to help people overcome challenges. It is applied in the treatment of pain, anxiety, and trauma, as well as in behavioral changes like quitting smoking or weight loss.

What makes hypnosis special is its ability to address deeply rooted patterns and blocks that often unconsciously influence our behavior. Imagine reacting the same way in certain situations, even though you know it doesn’t serve you well. Through hypnosis, you can uncover and gently dissolve these unconscious connections. The result: more freedom and clarity in dealing with such situations.

Classic applications and beyond

Of course, there are well-known uses of hypnosis, such as smoking cessation, birth preparation, or weight loss. But hypnosis can do so much more! Whether it’s dealing with fears, building self-love and confidence, or resolving inner conflicts – hypnosis is a flexible tool. And the exciting part: often, addressing one issue also resolves other challenges. Our subconscious is more complex and interconnected than we can imagine.

Self-hypnosis: Your everyday tool

Did you know you can also use hypnosis for yourself? Self-hypnosis is a wonderful way to do something good for yourself in everyday life. Whether for more calm, focus, or working on personal issues – its applications are versatile and empower your personal growth.

Safety and well-being come first

And what happens if I never wake up from hypnosis? Don’t worry, that won’t happen! Hypnosis is a natural state from which you can always return, either on your own or through external influences. Even if a session is interrupted – for example, due to a broken internet connection – your brain will return to its normal state, without you "getting stuck."

Why hypnosis is so special to me

Hypnosis is not only part of my profession but also something I regularly practice myself – whether through self-hypnosis or by working with my clients. It’s a fascinating process that helps us understand ourselves better and actively shape our lives.
